Michael Vick trustee seeks repayment of millions

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The trustee in Michael Vick's bankruptcy case is seeking repayment of at least $2 million that Vick doled out to friends and family members in the months before he was sent to federal prison.

A complaint filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News says Vick knew his lucrative NFL career was in jeopardy and that he would be facing huge legal bills.

Yet the complaint claims he continued to give money and gifts to his mother, siblings, fiancee and friends that should have gone to Vick's creditors.

Vick's bankruptcy attorney, Paul Campsen, did not immediately return a phone message Thursday.

Vick, who served 20 months for a federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction, is a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. A judge approved his bankruptcy plan last summer.

CAPITALS MOVES

Center Jay Beagle gets 2-year deal from Capitals

WASHINGTON (AP) — Center Jay Beagle has signed a two-year contract with the Washington Capitals.

The 24-year-old Beagle played in seven games with Washington last season, scoring his first NHL goal Nov. 23 at Ottawa. He had 16 goals and 19 assists in 66 games for the American Hockey League champion Hershey Bears, the Capitals' top minor league affiliate.

Washington also signed right wing Andrew Gordon, center Andrew Joudrey, and defensemen Zach Miskovic and Patrick McNeill to one-year contracts.

Gordon played in two games with the Capitals last season without registering a point.

The signings were announced Thursday.

MINOR LEAGUERS SUSPENDED

4 minor leaguers suspended 50 games each for drugs

NEW YORK (AP) — Two minor league players in the Washington Nationals' system and two other minor league free agents have been suspended 50 games each for violating the drug policy.

Infielder Steven Souza and outfielder J.R. Higley of Class A Hagerstown team were penalized Thursday after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

The 21-year-old Souza was a third-round draft pick in 2007 and was hitting .231 with 11 home runs, 56 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. The 22-year-old Higley was hitting .233 with two homers and 16 RBIs.

Also suspended were free agent outfielder Joshua Flores and shortstop Manuel Marquez. Their penalties will become effective if they sign with a major league organization.

Crystal Langhorne had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Washington (12-6), which snapped a four-game winning streak and lost for just the second time in 10 games. The Mystics dropped a game behind first-place Atlanta in the Eastern Conference.

After the Mystics cut a 14-point lead to five midway through the fourth quarter, the Liberty went 13 for 16 from the free-throw line to seal the win. Pondexter had eight points, including six free throws in the final 2:47.

March Madness will includes 4 1st round games

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA has decided to add a new round to the NCAA men's basketball tournament next year, when the field expands to 68 teams.

The men's basketball committee announced its plans Monday to four early games, with the winners earning their way into the 64-team second round. There has been only one early game since 2001, when the field expanded to 65 teams.

Two of the so-called "First Four" games will match the lowest seeds, between 65 and 68. The other two games will include the last four at-large qualifiers.

That should prevent mid-majors from being over-represented in the first-round games — and it probably means teams from BCS conferences will be playing for the right to get to the second round.

The dates and locations for the first-round games will be announced later. All games will be on Turner Broadcasting's truTV cable channel.

WCUP-US RATINGS

World Cup viewership on ABC/ESPN rises 41 percent

NEW YORK (AP) — World Cup television viewership rose 41 percent over four years ago for English-language telecasts in the United States, with Spain's 1-0 overtime victory over the Netherlands setting a record.

Sunday's game in Johannesburg, which gave the Spanish their first World Cup title, was seen by 15,545,000 viewers on ABC, according to fast national ratings. The previous high was 14,863,000 viewers for the United States' 2-1 overtime loss to Ghana in the second round on June 26.

An additional 8.8 million viewers watched Spanish-language coverage Sunday on Univision, according to Nielsen Media Research, bringing the total to 24.3 million.

SWILLIAMS-WTT

Serena Williams cuts foot, will miss WTT season

Serena Williams will miss the entire World TeamTennis season after cutting her foot.

The WTT said Monday she was to have played four matches for the Washington Kastles, but she hurt the bottom of her foot late last week and needed stitches.

It was not clear how she was injured. A message left with her publicist was not immediately returned.

Williams won her fourth Wimbledon crown this month and lost an exhibition to Kim Clijsters last Thursday before a record crowd in Brussels. She says she is "very disappointed" to miss the WTT season.

Her opening match was to have been last Friday against the New York Buzz in Glens Falls, N.Y. She also will miss matches in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Washington on Wednesday and New York on Thursday.

Vick a no-show at his own celebrity golf tourney

TUCKER, Ga. (AP) — Michael Vick has missed his own celebrity golf tournament after probation officials restricted travel for the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback over the weekend.

Vick's spokeswoman, Judy Smith, says Vick's travel has been at the discretion of his probation officer since he was released from prison in a federal dogfighting case.

The restriction follows a prosecutor saying this week that while Vick wasn't involved in a shooting after his 30th birthday party in Virginia Beach, Va., that he was in a confrontation before the incident.

Vick was a no-show Sunday at the Michael Vick Celebrity Golf tournament in Georgia and also did not make a scheduled appearance at a youth football camp in Raleigh, N.C., this weekend.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Travis Ishikawa drove in three runs, rookie Madison Bumgarner took a shutout into the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Sunday.

NASCAR-CHICAGOLAND FOLO

Reutimann's faith in Waltrip team rewarded

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — David Reutimann agreed to join Michael Waltrip Racing when it was closer to an abstract idea than a functioning, full-time race team in NASCAR's top series. Reutimann was hardly an established commodity himself.

Now the mutual gamble is paying off for both parties.

Reutimann won Saturday night's Sprint Cup series race at Chicagoland Speedway, zooming past Jeff Gordon late in the race and holding on to claim his second career victory in convincing fashion.

Now Reutimann is on the verge of making Waltrip's team his long-term home, having reached a handshake deal on a new contract.
