Area Heatwave Continues

Some local communities may see temperatures in the upper 90’s today, with heat indexes as high as 103 to 108. The centers for Disease Control says those who are at greatest risk for heat related illness are the elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases. But the young and healthy can also get sick if they over do it during hot weather. Other factors like obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn and prescription drug and alcohol use can play a role in heat illnesses. Health officials say if working outside, to drink plenty of fluids, wear light-colored, lightweight clothing and sunscreen. Also check on people who are at high risk, and do not leave children or pets in cars.
 
VDOT Announces Job Cuts, None on Northern Neck

Virginia Department of Transportation’s has announced nearly 600 layoffs throughout the Commonwealth, but just minimal job cuts in the Fredericksburg District that houses the Northern Neck residency. Of the 45 given noticed, there were no Northern Neck residency employees impacted. This is the second of three waves of employee reductions expected. The Northern Neck Residency is includes Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmoreland and Richmond counties. VDOT’s has reduced ferry services, mowing services and has closed rest areas in the district. The residency will soon add King George County to its maintenance schedule
 
Nokesville Man Dies In Crash

State Police say 46-year-old Edward Toth from Nokesville was killed when his Ultralight Aircraft crashed into Lake Anna shortly after one p.m. Sunday afternoon in Louisa County. The pilot's 17-year-old daughter, who was in the plane with him, was uninjured. Police say the plane left safely from Tappahannock but then lost altitude, stalled, and crashed into the lake. Toth was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
Stafford County Finds 5 Million Dollars

An accounting error within the Stafford County school system resulted in a $5.6 million surplus that went unnoticed for two years. Officials say the school division requested $174 million for payroll for the 2006-2007 school year, but the school staff entered more than $179 million in the ledger. The money was found in an account shared with the county. Another accounting firm is performing an audit of the school system’s finances.
 
VA Facility To Test Swine Flu Vaccine

Eastern Virginia Medical School is one of 15 sites nationwide testing the H1N1 influenza vaccine developed by pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis. Fifteen adults 18 and older are participating in the EVMS trial. Participants receive the first injection then return 21 days later to get a second dose and blood tests. All volunteers will be told at the end of the study whether they received the vaccine or a placebo, and those receiving the placebo will be given the real vaccine. The objective of the trial is to confirm safety and the effective dosage. All participants will be under close medical supervision throughout the study.
